The Walking Dave Episode 3: Comics, Inspiration

I’m sick today and the last two recordings I did, the audio was messed up, which meant I had to get off my ass and walk TODAY if I wanted a post up here.

So, thank you, accountability!

In this episode, I answered Heather’s question on what comic strips I liked and how they shaped my own characters.

I also talked about the first thing which I truly loved about comic strips which shapes the stories I tell today. I wonder if you’ll guess what it is.

And then I was joined by a special guest.

No, not the killer osprey.

But my 6-year old son, E.

No, E is not his real name.

It’s his decoy name 🙂

A couple of housekeeping notes.

I’ll be doing an Author Hangout with Sean Platt tonight at 8PM, so head on over to the Collective Inkwell website for info on that.

It’s not a hangout with OTHER AUTHORS to talk about publishing. It’s a hangout for our Goners, to talk about our stuff and whatever else comes up.

Also, I’m trying to decide the best way to post these.

Before now, I just had episode numbers. Starting today, I’m adding a couple of things I talked about, so it’s easier for those who aren’t keeping track of numbers to know if they already listened to a particular episode.

I was wondering if you think I should do a different photo for each podcast too? I think seeing the same photo over and over can make the blog look ugly. Plus, it can be confusing to people seeing the same photo over and over (though the title helps a bit).

The biggest reason to use the same photo for the podcast posts is so people who have no interest in them, can easily decide to only click on posts with other photos, knowing that THOSE posts are non-podcast posts and something they can read.

Understand?

I DO want to keep all of this on one blog, but I’d love to know what you think.

Thanks for listening (and reading),

dave

  1. As a huge fan of comic strips (Especially Peanuts & Calvin & Hobbs) it’s cool to hear how you were influenced.

We’ve spoken a bit about them before and I told you growing up in NZ, my favorite strip was Footrot Flats. Dog is very much in line with the animal characters you mentioned.

I really have to read more of Todd & Penguin at some stage. I’ve read a few but not all of them. You should do a special edition strip of that for some reason. Maybe as a goal/price point for the SPP Kickstarter?

The Osprey Hungers… he is coming. I can’t wait to see what happens next with your personal version of the Family Guy Giant Chicken.

My question for the next episode is:
If one of your favorite worlds was at some point opened up Kindle Worlds. Would you write a story in it? I know you’ve said previously you want to do your own things. But say if… Stephen King or Clive Barker had a world up there… would you be tempted?

    Keep walking.

  2. Sorry you’re not feeling good, Dave. Hopefully it will pass soon. I commend you on getting out there and walking so that you would have more podcast to post, but I don’t think any of us will perish if you actually skip a day here and there 🙂 Also, I think you should use “The Walking Dave” cartoon heading for all podcasts so that we, your fans, can easily find them; and for those few who don’t want to listen, they can easily skip them – may their ears fall off. LOL

  3. Well done Dave. Good idea to keep it around this length. I’ve been thinking of doing the same sort of thing for a while, since I walk the dog most days anyway. So what do you do to record it, talk into your phone or wear a mic?

    Keep walking, keep talking.

    1. Thanks, Mikey. I use a Roland R-05, which I’d bought for a different podcast I may still do, and realized that it also has great mice built in. I think you could do it with a phone and a decent lavalier, mic, and an app though. I don’t have an iPhone, so I’m not as familiar with what’s available.

  4. Hahaha! I’ve run your son’s voice through my facy-dancy voice recognition software and now have thousands of nano-microphone-bots searching the earth for a match! It’s only a matter of time before we find you and your internet service provider!

No, but really, call us bastards again, but more slowly… oh that’s good stuff…

  5. Just wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying the Walking Dave podcast.

I think it’s a great length and I love how it’s got a completely different feel from the SPP and BOU. Keep it up!

  6. I think this podcast is a great idea, and I’m considering doing something similar myself when I get back to Canada next month. I do have a question though: Will you be putting these up on iTunes so I can listen while I walk?
